Increase traffic on your company's website:

Every firm wants to increase the amount of traffic to its website. One way to help the firm increase its web readership is through Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

SEO is the process of designing or altering an existing website in order to make it more searchengine friendly.

There are three main areas to focus on when trying to improve the ranking of a site on search engines: meta tags, body text and the number of links back to your site, from other sites.

Meta tags
Meta tags are behind-the-scenes operations that enable one computer to tell another how the pages of a website should be handled. They also give search engines extra information so they can be indexed and ranked. There are several types of meta tags.
Title tag - Each page of the site should have a unique and relevant title, as this is part of the criteria search engines use to rank your site. Relevant title tags mean more search engine hits and therefore more users. Your title tag should include three important elements: a key phrase describing what you do, your company name, and an additional more specific key phrase.

Description tag - The description tag is basically a description of the company. It should be kept relatively short so word selection is very important. Focus on keywords relating to site content.

Keyword tag - Apparently, the major search engines don't pay much attention to keyword tags anymore but it won't hurt to cover all the angles. Keyword tags should only contain terms that are highly relevant to the page and should be kept to less than 30 words.

Body text
Body text is quite possibly the most important factor in search engine optimization. Search engine spiders can only read text accurately and often miss important information in images, Java script, and Flash.

Linking
The number and relevancy of site links are also important criteria for search engines. In other words your site will potentially rank higher with search engines if you have 300 links rather than 30. Remember, though, that those 300 links must be relevant to the content in your site. For example, a site that specializes in footwear linking to a site that specializes in eyeglasses will do nothing to improve search engine ranking. Beware of companies that promise thousands of links since many of those links may be irrelevant.
